Yoga

“We don’t use the body to get into the pose, we use the pose to get into the body” Bernie Clark

Yoga became a beautiful and necessary part of the repertoire as a contrast to the high yang energy of dnb. I trained in Real Flow Yoga in 2017 to offer a holistic practice consisting of asana (posture) pranayama (breath control) centering (meditation) philosophy, life ethics and savasana (relaxation). I practice daily and only teach what has resonated with me so you can be sure of an authentic experience.

More recently I trained with the Prison Yoga Project with a trauma-informed approach, which has guided my teaching path. Time and energy for yoga are mainly spent within more marginalised populations delivering classes in prisons, a probation hostel, a recovery centre for those recovering from alcohol and substance misuse and chair yoga for those with mobility issues. Some of these sessions also get a healthy dose of dnb and dance too.

A trauma-informed approach supports the individual in making choices as to what feels best in their body, knowing that they are the experts of course. The sequencing activates both parts of the autonomic nervous system in a safe environment so help reset the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems which can sometimes get unbalanced. Trauma is stored in the body and this style of yoga supports a release of that. If you are interested in this area it’s worth reading ‘The Body keeps the Score’ by Bessel van der Kolk.
